  • School Admissions (Reception to Year 6)

    About Us

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School is a two-form entry, voluntary aided school in the London Borough of Merton and places are allocated by our governing body once the application process (explained below) is complete. Our Published Admission Number is 30 children per class in Reception and 26 children for Nursery morning and afternoon sessions.

Many children join us in nursery, but others join Reception or in different year groups throughout the school year. Please do contact us to ask about availability for in-year admissions. If children are joining us from another school, it is helpful if they bring any records from their previous school when you come to visit us.

We firmly believe that visiting our school is the best way for families to discover what makes Sacred Heart special. Have a look at our Gallery page  for some photographs of our Nursery and Reception classes in action, watch our Early Years welcome or 'Learning in Love' video, or download a copy of our prospectus below. We appreciate that applying for schools or nurseries can be daunting so please do contact us if you have any questions about the process.

    School Tours

We hold regular tours for families looking for a Reception or Nursery place for the next academic year. You can book a tour now (using the red button above) or you are welcome to call the office on 020 89420215 during school hours to request a tour. All tours are led by Mrs Dolan-Walsh our Headteacher or another senior member of staff.

    School Admissions

Whether you're applying for a place in Reception or an in-year transfer, please be aware of the following:

    • Two application forms should be completed. Please complete your local authority's Common Application Form (CAF) for Reception or the In-Year Transfer Application as well as our Supplementary Information Form. Merton residents can complete the Common Application Form (CAF) for Reception applications online at or click here for Merton's In-Year Application Form. If you do not live in Merton you will need to apply through your own local authority for  a Reception place and you can include Sacred Heart in your application. Please head to your local authority's website and follow the links to school admissions.

    • Complete the Supplementary Information Form (available to download below) and CAF online or complete a paper copy and send it to the Local Authority by the deadline published by Merton. Completion of our Supplementary Information Form is not mandatory, however, if it is not completed, the governing body will not be able to consider your application fully against the school's faith criteria.

    • Please include copies of baptismal certificates (if available) with the Supplementary Information Form. Your child's baptismal certificate (if available) will be copied for the school records when the Supplementary Information Form is returned to the school. If your child is offered a place we will also need to see their birth certificate before they start school.

Applying for a place in Reception

All children can start school in the September following their 4th birthday. If your child was born between 1st September 2019 and 31st August 2020 they are eligible to start school in September 2024. Merton publishes school admissions criteria on its website

If you do not live in Merton you will need to apply through your own local authority and you can include Sacred Heart in your application. Please head to your local authority's website and follow the links to school admissions.

Please remember, in addition to applying through your local authority, our Supplementary Application Form (available to download below) should be returned direct to the school office.

    In-Year Applications

If you have recently moved into the area and need a primary school place for your child you will need to complete an in-year application form. You are encouraged to contact us first to discuss availability. As we are a Merton school you can download a form by clicking here. In addition, our Supplementary Application Form (available to download above) should be completed and returned to the school.

The following link explains more about in-year applications.

From 18th March 2020 to 5th June 2022 the Bishops of England and Wales suspended the obligation to attend Mass in England and Wales. As of the 5th June, Pentecost, the Bishops will lift the suspension of the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Parents applying for a place at Sacred Heart, under a faith based criteria, will need to complete a Supplementary Application Form. Evidence of practice will be measured by frequency of attendance at Mass as validated by either a priest or minister, as was the case prior to 18th March 2020. These arrangements apply to 2023 admissions and subsequent admissions rounds.
